FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — October 20, 2008 — The Hartz Mountain Corporation, Secaucus, NJ is voluntarily recalling one specific lot of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Hartz is fully cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration in this voluntary recall.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs, and, if there is cross-contamination caused by handling of the rawhide chips, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

I’m still in the midst of switching over to Linux on my desktop PC. So far, I will be running a quad boot with Ubuntu (GNOME), Kubuntu (KDE4), Fedora 9, and OpenSUSE. And oh yeah…did I mention that I’ve lost every bit of 4 years of data I had on my Windows install?

Anyway, I’ve come out of all this to report what I’ve stumbled upon. It’s a new strain of the Canine Parvovirus (CPV). Here’s some of the findings from Oklahoma State University:

STILLWATER,
Okla.—a team of Oklahoma State University (OSU) veterinarians,
virologists and pathologists at the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic
Laboratory (OADDL) recently published a paper in the Journal of
Clinical Microbiology on their findings from a Canine parvovirus (CPV)
study. Led by Dr. Sanjay Kapil, the group is the first to describe the
CPV type 2c variant in the United States.

“We were quite fortunate to discover this variant,” explains Kapil.
“It has been known for six years in Italy but nobody paid attention to
it here until we found it last year.”

Shortly after Kapil joined the OSU Center for Veterinary Health
Sciences, he received a case at the OADDL. The adult dog had been
vaccinated multiple times and still became sick with Parvovirus.

Maker of tainted pet food to pay $3.1 million

1/4/2008
By MEG KINNARD
Associated Press Writer

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – A company that made contaminated pet food that killed dozens of dogs nationwide will pay $3.1 million in a settlement with pet owners, an attorney said Friday.

The pet food, which contained a mold called aflatoxin, was produced at Diamond Pet Foods’ plant in South Carolina. The company will set up a fund to reimburse pet owners for the loss of their dog, veterinarian bills and the cost of any unreturned contaminated food, said attorney Jim Andrews, who represented a Knoxville, Tenn., family that sued the company.

Diamond Pet Foods, based in Meta, Mo., acknowledged that workers at its Gaston, S.C., plant failed to follow internal testing procedures to ensure its products were safe. The company made the acknowledgment after the Food and Drug Administration released a report showing the company has no record of test results for 12 shipments of corn in 2005, when grain tainted with the deadly fungus slipped into the plant….
